aus - SITTING/FALLING
Description: For decades, an underground Onsen (hot spring) facility has lain dormant, its quiet chambers haunted by faint traces of what once was.
SITTING/FALLING explores the dual nature of hot springs—their paradoxical interplay between stillness and flow.
In the dim expanse of a hall, fragmented melodies drift like specters. Traditional matsuri/festival music, the sounds of local performing arts, and even Hawaiian tunes—nostalgic echoes of Japan’s bubble-era resorts—are fractured and refracted through the natural reverberations of the onsen. The result is a soundscape that feels half-forgotten, like memories eroded by time. Beyond this space lies a room veiled in translucent vinyl, where a solitary piano stands abandoned. Its untuned notes, distorted and amplified by its soundboard, merge with the ethereal chime of wind bells scattered across town and the ceaseless murmur of flowing water, coalescing into an ever-turning drone—a soundscape mirroring the perpetual movement of the springs themselves.
Woven through this auditory tapestry is a poem, pieced together from the names of inns and shops that once thrived here. These names, relics of the bubble economy, possess a peculiar charm: pastoral, idealistic, almost dreamlike. They speak of a bygone era brimming with hope and ambition, now softly distilled into a wistful echo of time lost yet somehow cherished.
